Growing Food Forests

Growing food forests is an ancient way of farming land that works well in less predictable climates. These woodlands are a patchwork of traditional trees like oak, beech & alder, combined with smaller fruit & nut trees and medicinal plants. The multi-layered species gives the best chance of procuring good harvests and of withstanding the challenges of a changing climate.

Fruit & Nut

Thanks to funds from Stink Films, our partners at Tree Source planted 1118 food forest trees at Cold Ashton, Somerset. The planting team are fastidious when it comes to planting holistically and their designs encouraged the growth of the underground mycorrhizal fungal networks that are so important for plant & tree growth, health and vitality. This growing woodland is a diverse habitat where flora and fauna can thrive.

Carbon Sinks

Carbon dioxide is not just sequestered by trees but also drawn into the roots, microbes and decaying organic matter of the forest floor. When soil is particularly healthy, this environment can hold more carbon than the trees themselves. When the trees die they release carbon dioxide, but not before having reseeded the next generation of young trees. This is how forests deliver a net gain in carbon dioxide sequestration.
