Agroforestry & Woolly Pigs
Thanks to your funds, a total of 2,400 trees are being planted at Brodiclea, Scotland during the Winter of 2026/27.
The trees will be part of an agroforestry scheme to intersperse woodland with undeniably enchanting 'Mangaletsa' woolly pigs!

THE PLANTING SITE
We’re delighted to be supporting the planting of 2,400 native trees along a 418m stretch of the Rye Water at Brodiclea in Rye Glen, near Dalry - a landscape that feels remote despite its proximity to town. The glen has become increasingly wild, with fragments of ancient woodland developing into Temperate Atlantic Rainforest. This riverside planting responds to the local angling club’s request for more shade as temperatures rise, helping protect wild fish stocks while strengthening biodiversity and climate resilience.

THE WOOLLY PIGS
The site is owned and managed by the Future Forest Company, who combine carbon storage with innovative habitat restoration. Their award-winning agroforestry system includes Mangaletsa “woolly” pigs, which act as a proxy for wild boar. As they root and forage, they naturally cultivate the soil, increase soil carbon, control bracken and encourage wildflowers and young trees to regenerate - adding ecological value as well as being a joy to see!

THE TREES
Of the 2,400 trees, 1,500 will be locally collected willow cuttings - including Bay, Tea-leaved, Dark-leaved, Purple, Crack and Eared willows - helping maintain local genetics and increase diversity. Alder will also be planted alongside shrubs such as blackthorn, guelder rose and bird cherry. Willows will be unguarded, shrubs planted in 60cm tubes and alder in 1.2m tubes. Planting will take place from autumn 2026 to spring 2027.
